About

The house

Scheidegger Webpublishing is a Swiss sole proprietorship working for the whole of Switzerland. One person, one workshop, and websites that have to be kept running.

Position

A website is not a delivery

A great many sites stop being looked at the day the invoice is settled. They stay online, but nobody checks any more that they open, that the certificates are valid, that the words are still true. Eighteen months later they serve little purpose, and their owner hears about it from a customer.

A publishing house keeps its titles and answers for them. That is the relationship the workshop has with its own sites, and the one it offers its clients: a website is not a delivery, it is an undertaking to keep it open.

This forces some thankless technical choices and a maintenance line priced into the very first quote. In exchange, the watching does not rest on you: it is not the client’s job to notice that a certificate has expired.

Background

Four trainings, one way of working

What follows is not a curriculum vitae. It is the reason this site is built the way it is, and every claim can be checked by clicking.

Law

Law degree from the University of Fribourg, awarded magna cum laude, with a dual specialisation: protection of personal and family wealth, and the criminal law of economic and financial crime. Assistantship at a chair of administrative law, and teaching in law.

The compliance file on this site cites the statutes rather than recycling blog posts, and its legal notice publishes what a statute requires, and nothing beyond. Every line kept can name its provision; every line left out can say why.

Finance

Investment advisory at UBS, then financial analysis at Procter & Gamble.

A quote that holds, a catalogue whose prices are set in advance, and someone able to tell you that a request will not repay what it costs. That is a sentence a supplier paid by the task has no interest in saying.

Applied arts

Eikon, school of applied arts, Fribourg.

Form is not delegated to a bought template and recoloured. Every title in the catalogue has its own grid, its own typography and its own images, which is exactly what sets it apart from a site made on a production line.

Research

Research at EPFL, School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The habit of the verifiable source, and of the note that says where a claim comes from. That is where one non-negotiable rule comes from: each language is written, none is run through a machine.

Scope

What the house actually does

  • Design and build, from the first mock-up to going live.
  • Editorial sites: magazines, long-form files, guides, with the structure that goes with them.
  • Applications and customer areas, when a page you simply read is no longer enough.
  • Online shops and catalogues that take the order.
  • Multilingual versions, written rather than run through a machine.
  • Taking over an existing site that nobody maintains any more.
  • Hosting, maintenance, backups and security, on a yearly flat fee.
  • Auditing an existing site and bringing it into regulatory compliance.
